Does God let bad things happen?

Or do bad things happen, because in the giant cosmos of cause-and-effect and the complexity of free will, we inadvertently start off a chain reaction of bad things?

Or because there is an enemy out to get us?

Not that any answer is mutually exclusive. I believe it’s a combination of the latter two, but I’d love your thoughts. 

It’s just a random thought 60s ago about something an acquaintance remarked yesterday.  

Was telling N about how some “friends” only contact you when they have problems, and after agreeing… she said this: is that just like God?

I went silent for awhile, trying to deny that I don’t do that to God. 

But I do.
